Jealousy

The day I get to pen a news story which begins "A gay man, who took a huge dose of LSD and injured his roommate by hitting him over the head with a 12-inch glass penis after setting his house on fire while nude...", I can retire from journalism in the knowledge I'll never write a better intro par.

Oh my goodness. It was good of his party guests to remove his firearms from his room as he was obviously Batshit Off His Tits.

I find it curious that the man's homosexuality is emphasised. To me, his actions seem completely nuts for anyone, and are patently drug-induced; why should we have to know that he's gay and that his identity is being protected because he thinks the military will lynch him because he's gay? Why not 'Man takes lots of drugs, stabs self and stove, hits roommate with 12 inch glass penis'? As if you need to be gay to have a 12 inch glass penis.

Still... awesome intro.

I agree. How is his sexuality in any way relevant to the article? It just makes the author sound homophobic to me.

Well, it is the Gay and Lesbian Times so I'm guessing no malice is intended (although yeah, normally that'd be as out of line as making play of their race/religion/age where it's not relevant to the story).

I'm assuming in this case it's shoehorned in as a signal that look! this is Relevant To Your Interests As A Gay Person and not just a prurient piece of giggling at something reckless someone did while off their tits on drugs (which of course it *is*, hence the need to try to pretend it's not).
